A New Year a new you’ a New Year’s resolution is simply a long term goal.

New Year’s Eve is right next door it has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes.

Whether you’re looking to make a big change, or just tweak a few little things, the new year gives you the perfect opportunity to reflect on your behaviour and resolve to do better going forward.

What do you hope to achieve within the coming year.  They’re not really any different than any other challenging goal that we set for ourselves aside from the convenience of the calendar year as a tool for keeping track of our progress. Speaking of which…A resolution paired with a year has a very convenient structure for keeping track of progress. If you want to watch the march of progress, the calendar is set up perfectly for you. 52 weeks. 12 months. Four quarters. At the start of the year, you have a great structure for milestones and progress checks that fall right in place. This is so convenient, in fact, that it makes the new year a particularly convenient time to make a resolution.

Clear measurements of success make it easier to track progress. For example, if you’re seeking to get yourself into better physical shape,  stop smoking ,seeking out specific measurements of some kind for your health is very convenient.

The only one disadvantage of this approach is to get disheartened when one fails example, your trying to “quit smoking” and it just didn’t quite work out for that day but  one can always pick straight back up if you chose to.

Tradition dictates that every 365 days, you should try to kick bad habits and start your life anew a new year a new you. So sit down with a cup of coffee OR tea, a paper and a pen, and reflect: What kinds of New Years Resolutions will you make for yourself this January 1st?

1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends

More than 50% of peaple vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends. this year  Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening  at a favourite  restaurant or take the family to one of these popular Pittsburgh places for family fun. Work shouldn’t always come first!

2. Fit in Fitness

The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. Why not make this the time to start getting in shape for one of these popular Pittsburgh Area Charity Walks, Runs or Rides?

3. Tame the Bulge

Over 66 percent of adult  are considered overweight or obese by recent studies, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of peaple who made a New Year’s commitment to shed extra pounds.

4. Quit Smoking

If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you’ve tried to quit before and failed, don’t let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good. Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life! Even Allegheny County is trying to go smoke-free, and it’s taken them a few tries as well. Locally, there are a variety of free support services, hotlines and smoking cessation classes to help you kick the smoking habit.

5. Enjoy Life More

Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of peaple, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years. It’s an important step to a happier and healthier you! Consider a healing centre, reconnect with your higher self read books on healing yourself to bring balance to your body, mind and soul. Or just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby or try your hand at skiing. Go to a theatre performance, or head to the local spa.

6. Quit Drinking

While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. Alcoholics Anonymous offers meetings throughout  many country’s . There is also  groups for Parents of Teenage Alcohol and Drug Abusers. There are also a number of treatment-based programs, as well as support groups for families of alcoholics.

7. Get Out of Debt

Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of peaple who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It’s a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

8. Learn Something New

Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you’ll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year’s resolutions to keep. our Community College   offers a wide variety of “lifelong learning” courses, and  offer great recreational training for beginners of all ages. Most local colleges and universities offer distance and adult education programs.

9. Help Others

A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library ,blog like I do, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. Or if your time is really in short supply, maybe you can at least find it in you to donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need, rather than leaving them out by the curb to fill up our landfills.

10. Get Organized

On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized a little better so that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life.  reduce the clutter in your life and find peace in your home.

Set Spiritual Goals for the New Year

When we set spiritual goals for the New Year we create a foundation for material goals to blossom. If we focus solely on the external – the exercise program, the weight loss, the financial plans, the career success – we end up feeling empty, even if we do achieve them. When we place our attention on the essence of these objectives, the true reason we want to achieve them, we feel whole and balanced. From this place it becomes much easer to manifest our heart’s desires.

Below is a process I use when setting goals for the New Year. As you set your spiritual goals, remember the wise words of Abraham Lincoln: “And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

Review Last Year

Before we move onto something new, we need to let go of the old. Everything that took place last year is gone. What remains are the lessons, gifts and growth. Review your past year before you set goals for the New Year. Here are some questions to get you started:

~ What were the challenging parts of last year? What did you learn from them?

~ What were the uplifting parts? What developed and blossomed as a result?

~ What surprises took place? How did you handle them?

~ What softened, what strengthened, what opened within you?

When you have reviewed all the ups, downs and in-betweens of last year, bid them a fond farewell and move onto the present and future.

Set Spiritual Goals for the New Year

It’s often easier to think of external, material goals, but within these are the seeds of spiritual growth. For example, I want to earn a certain amount of money next year. When I explore why, I see it’s because I want to feel free and abundant.

If I make the spiritual goals of freedom and abundance a priority, the money will naturally follow (as within, so without the saying goes). Examine all of the things you’d like to achieve next year through the following questions:

~ What will achieving each goal give you? Why do you really want it? How will you feel when you have it?

~ With each goal, what wants to emerge in you, what’s waiting to blossom?

~ What qualities do you value most – i.e. love, amusement, creativity, adventure? How can you turn these into goals?

~ What spiritual qualities would you like to develop, strengthen or deepen – i.e. unconditional love, forgiveness, patience, trust, truth? How can you embrace these in your life on a daily basis?

Spiritual goals are not necessarily measurable in the same way material goals are. There isn’t a measuring stick or end result to love, forgiveness and patience. They blossom and materialize in a variety of ways. Yet, with the simple power of intention, you can set them in motion without any specific plans in place. As Michael Beckwith reminds us, “The power within you is greater than the power that’s in the world.”

The Spiritual Path: What is Spirituality?

what-is-spirituality-meditationSpirituality is the path and process of self change, improvement, and action that leads to awakening. Many people in today’s society are considering themselves more spiritual than religious, including teenagers. However, these spiritualists have their own definition of what spirituality means to them so it shows how the spiritual path can differ among us.

For example, people may have not considered my first sentence of this spiritual blog as the definition of spirituality. Also, spirituality is not a religion. Religions are associated with doctrines, dogma, large organizations, based on a widely accepted belief system on how events occurred, what God is, the process of creation, etc., whereas spirituality is learning about and experiencing one’s own self on a deeper level that leads to the realization of truth and the spiritual reality.

Countless Spiritual Paths

There are as many different paths and processes to realizing truth as there are as many people. Like Mt. Everest, one of the tallest mountains on earth, the top of the mountain is the goal and the sides of the mountain are the way up to the goal. With no set paths, people try and climb Mt. Everest, paving their own way, experiencing their own side, facing their different challenges, having achievements along the way, and ultimately reaching the top. At the top, where the climbers discuss their path, the one thing in common is that they reached their highest goal, but getting there was completely different with its own set of challenges, achievements, and experiences. Similarly then, spirituality is the individual path of change, improvement, and action which leads to awakening (top of the mountain).

Spirituality: Change, Self-Improvement, Action

Spirituality is the path and process of self change. Change is important because no one is the same person. Every moment is changing and in each moment a person is changing. Changing yourself is putting efforts into dissolving and uncovering the darkness and clouds. Spirituality is the path and process of self improvement. In order to change, one must grow, learn, and have experiences. Reflection of the self and what needs improvement is a key factor in realizing one’s negative and positive qualities that need improvement. With self-analysis, one can find the blocks and errors in thinking that are causing and collecting pain and suffering in the life. Spirituality is the path and process of action because without action, knowing one needs to improve and change does not equal change and improvement. Taking steps, working (not just thinking) on the self daily is what helps a person climb the mountain of spiritual awakening.

Spirituality, Self-Realization, Enlightenment

Spirituality leads to self awakening. As a person dissolves his or her illusion, thinking, and emotions that cause pain and suffering in life, he or she climbs the “Mountain of Life”. As the pain and suffering are dissolved, the person rises higher and higher in the spiritual realm getting glimpses of truth. Such glimpses of truth only inspire and motivate a person even more to discover his or herself and reach the top to experience ultimate peace, happiness, and bliss. Once the soul is clear of any veil of illusion, darkness, it sees everything clearly without thinking, feeling, or any other senses. It knows and experiences all truth for itself, and this moment is called self-awakening, self-realization, or spiritual enlightenment. Overall, spirituality is an invidual’s path, journey, and experience to finding and knowing one’s true self, the soul.

Thought for the day

Most people can look back over the years and identify a time and place at which their lives changed significantly. Whether by accident or design, these are the moments when, because of a readiness within us and a collaboration with events occurring around us, we are forced to seriously reappraise ourselves and the conditions under which we live and to make certain choices that will affect the rest of our lives.
